A Norwegian Marinejegerkommandoen (MJK) special operator aiming a Colt Canada 5.56 × 45mm C8SFW carbine with Aimpoint CompM4 red dot optic. (Kelly Stumpf, Colt Canada)
EO Tech Holographic Weapon Sights have become the choice for the majority of the world’s SOF for a number of reasons. The EO Tech doesn’t require the shooter to look down a tube or scope. If he can see the target reticle on the EO Tech, he can fire. This means the EO Tech is exceptionally well suited for CQB work and shooting accurately from stress positions and poor angles, over or around barricades or while wearing respirators or other hazardous material protective equipment. It will also operate if the glass is broken and does not fog or be affected by temperature variations.
Later models are also night vision capable, meaning the reticle is viewable through night vision goggles. EO Techs will also work with another recent innovation that has seen extensive use with SOF in Afghanistan, the switch-to-side EO Tech Magnifier. A similar system is also available for the Aimpoint and is basically a three-power magnifier that sits behind the EO Tech or Aimpoint and uses the optic to provide the reticle or dot whilst magnifying the field of vision. It allows a primarily CQB sight to be used for longer range shooting. Both the EO Tech and Aimpoint variants also swing out of the way when not required, so an operator can use the magnifier when fighting their way into a target compound, for example, and then flip it out of the way to use the primary CQB sight at close quarters to engage hostiles inside the compound.
